Gravesite planting

milkweed.jpg

We encourage families to install native plants on and around the graves of loved ones. This can be a great way to maintain a sense of connection while also helping to beautify the area, restore the native seedbank, and promote pollinators. As per PNB Rules and Regulations, only native, non-invasive species are permitted. Many native plants are still very showy and produce beautiful flowers or are otherwise attractive. Please note that we do not permit trees or shrubs to be planted in the burial ground, but we do allow tree donations for designated nearby areas. Small perennial plants are acceptable; please consult staff if you have questions about the permissibility of a given species.

While we are happy to advise in the process, families are ultimately responsible for the purchase, installation, and any required upkeep of these plants. Note: Newly installed plants often require regular watering if the weather is uncooperative. Unfortunately, we don’t have the infrastructure to monitor and water individual plants, so families may wish to bring water with them or hire a gardener to handle this for them at least until the plants get established.

Local-genotype native plants are available from Hummingbird Hill Native Plant Nursery and Little Bluestem Nursery, and occasionally at a few other local plant nurseries. Simply mention that you are purchasing seedlings for a gravesite at PNB and the staff at these nurseries will help you choose the perfect plants.
