Memorial tree donations

001copy.jpg

Panorama Natural Burial is happy to accept memorial tree donations. These trees are a way to remember a loved one and improve the visual and ecological appeal of the landscape at the same time. Trees will be tagged with a simple plaque containing the names of its species and the person it is dedicated to. There may be a small surcharge for memorialization and maintenance of the tree.

If you would like to donate a tree to Panorama Natural Burial you must purchase and plant it yourself, although PNB staff are happy to advise in the process. We will also be present for the planting to ensure that everything is in order. You may contract a landscaper or gardener to install the tree should that be desired. Local plant nurseries should carry many of the recommended trees, and trees can also be ordered online.

PNB staff will help you select the ideal site for your donated tree. Please note that we currently have several areas designated for memorial trees, mainly in the meadow near the driveway above the burial ground, the periphery of the exit road and the underground gas line, or in the wetter bottomlands below the burial ground. Different tree species have different requirements for sun exposure and soil moisture which will determine where they should be installed. Memorial trees cannot be planted in the burial ground itself.

The main threats to newly-planted trees are consumption by herbivores and lack of water. Donated trees are encouraged to be somewhat sizable (greater than 5 feet in height and/or 2 inches trunk caliper) in order to increase their chance of survival should they be chewed on. PNB will provide protective caging to keep animals from injuring the tree as well. Trees will also need to be “watered in” when they are planted, and may require additional watering during times of drought as the root systems get established. PNB staff will regularly water the trees if the weather is not compliant, but donors are encouraged to water as well. PNB will do our best to ensure the trees’ survival, although we accept no responsibility should they succumb to nature’s whims.
